Scope of activities
The Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) is a collaborative international approach to document the status and progress of ocean acidification in open-ocean, coastal, and estuarine environments, to understand the drivers and impacts of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems, and to provide spatially and temporally resolved biogeochemical data necessary to optimize modeling for ocean acidification. GOA-ON builds capacity in regions that currently have limited observation records and little ocean science capacity by distributing sensor kits that will allow scientists in resource-poor countries to collect reliable data and so contribute to the global ocean acidification monitoring effort. Sensor kits are to be distributed to scientists in Fiji, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, and in several Caribbean nations by 2019.
The team intends to share information on low-cost alternatives for moderate quality carbon measurements, not only for those GOA-ON participants that will be receiving kits, but also for anyone interested in building and operating their own ocean acidification monitoring program on a limited budget. We hope to use this forum to share information and experiences to help the community and work towards more standardized approaches for making observations.
